Halloween etiquette: The distribution of treats

This afternoon, we've been raising questions about the etiquette of Halloween, and hope you, readers will weigh in. So, when it comes to handing out treats, is it OK to play favorites when distributing treats, giving a handful to the darling 3-year-old elaborately decked out as a princess, but only a single item to her 12-year-old brother with a sheet draped over his shoulders?

Or do you do the opposite, giving a little extra to the children who seem to be short on resources? How about parents who take babies in strollers, collecting treats on behalf of their infants? Do they evoke sympathy or scorn? Is it OK to have separate bowls, with the best treats reserved for kids you know?

Do you let children help themselves, or do you dispense treats according to your judgment? Parents, do you purloin any of your children's treats after they have gone to bed? This year, with many family budgets hurting, have you talked you your children about people who might not be handing out candy, or who might have downgraded— gone to smarties when chocolate bars were once the norm? What are your favorite treats to get? What do you give? Has the economy changed the   quantity or quality of candy you are distributing this year?
