On a recent boating expedition to Lake Moondarra it was noted that a few recreational boaties were not aware of the correct etiquette while using and being around boat ramps. As the 2011 Xstrata Mount Isa Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic looms upon us, it is a timely reminder to all who use our wonderful lake to take care, to be courteous and use commonsense.
We are all there to have a great experience at the lake either by doing water sports or fishing. We were horrified to witness people retrieving their boats onto trailers and remaining on the boat ramp to secure the boat as well as unload the boat. It was quite some time later that the ramp was free for others to use.
The boat ramp is there for the launching and retrieving of boats or other water craft. All other adjustments and securing of boats should be done away from the ramp to enable others to use the facilities.
The least amount of time possible should be actually spent on the ramp. It is recommended that towing your boat to a safe area away from the ramp is an ideal location to secure tie-down straps and apply the leg support to the motor.
It is also worth a mention that if the boat ramp has room for two or more boats, then ensure that you do not back your boat down the ramp at an angle so as to impede others using other lanes. It is also important to note that excessive boat wash can cause dangerous situations on the boat ramp.
Launching and retrieving boats in these conditions can result in serious injuries to persons and vessels being damaged. It is not unusual for women or children to be holding the family boat at the ramp. The Qld Recreational Boating and Fishing Guide states that six knots is the directed speed within 30 metres of a boat ramp.
Remember: - "Watch your Wash - 6 Knots all vessels"The Maritime Safety/Boating and Fishing Patrol and Queensland Water Police will have a presence at the lake over the Fishing Classic weekend and will be there to offer advice and are happy to impart their knowledge on all things maritime.
We hope to see you out on the water and please be mindful of others on the water. One of the more pleasant activities of the Mount Isa Fish Stocking Group was to announce our 100th member of the group for 2011.
This went to Ryder Moore who was happy to receive one of our Fishing Classic Polo Shirts, an MIFSG cap and sticker. Congratulations Ryder and thanks to all our valued members for your support.
