Party etiquette

Posted in : Party Etiquette

(added last year!)

So the social scene has finally begun picking up after the dryness that was the month of January and that means more parties and more people to meet especially if you are in the business of being what Kenyan’s like to call with a touch of sarcasm a ‘celeb’.

Most celebs who have been in the business long enough know how to carry themselves in public, especially where pictures are taken and notes written down. They know well enough that should they choose to misbehave, it’s better to do it in the privacy of their homes.

Be cool: Be yourself but not too cool. You don’t want people thinking you are too stuck up or worse boring to death. Be polite and if someone is pestering you, politely extricate yourself from the situation and make as if you are heading for the bathrooms.

You might also get star struck at the said event and it will serve you well not to come on too strong, rather introduce yourself, congratulate the said personality on their success then keep it moving after a little chitchat. And please don’t go sit at a corner and stare at them like they may be your next meal.

Stay clear-headed: If you don’t drink you are lucky, you wont fall victim to the ‘accidents’ that normally take place during parties especially those that feature an open bar. If you are imbibing it’s a good idea to pace yourself. Open bar does not mean tasting everything on the drinks menu, stick to your drink of choice and don’t overdo it. If you are well known be sure people will be watching you so they can talk about how drunk or sober you are.

If you are already boisterous in personality don’t be shocked if you are labelled drunk anyway, beer goggles tend to make people think everyone around them is also drunk.

Mingle: It’s always good to mingle with the crowd, say hi to people you k now and meet those you don’t. If you are in the public eye and happen to be single expect that any extra time spent with a member of the opposite sex will be noted. Did they dance, together?

Take body shots? Leave at the same time. Some celebrities go to great lengths to avoid this even though their shenanigans are already well known. An example is Diddy and his unofficial girlfriend Cassie. The duo is never pictured arriving or leaving together. In fact it’s been alleged that he’d rather leave through the back entrance than be pictured with Cassie. Poor girl.

Leave early: Please whatever you do don’t be those people who stay until the sun begins to peak over the horizon. While some celebrities believe that it’s cool to arrive fashionably late others believe it’s the opposite, staying until they are asked to leave.

Others like to leave as soon as the open bar turns into a cash bar even though the event has just begun and a few others prefer to arrive late enough to spend only as little time possible at the event. Still ‘a party aint a party till it’s run all through’ so go out and have fun…responsibly.
