Smartphone etiquette: when to put the phone away (Video)

A recent survey by the company Intel finds that cell phone use in public is on the rise, and we're now faced with figuring out new rules of etiquette. For a lovely lunch date on the Upper East Side, Nathan Baden brings his wife and his smartphone. "Why both? Because we've been married 42 years!" Baden said.

Again and again, he turns his attention to one and away from the other. Guess who's miffed? "He needs the telephone every minute, that's all he does," said Karen Baden, Nathan's wife. A recent survey by Intel finds that public displays of technology are on the rise. "I know I always probably have mine out," said Haley Parker, a smartphone user.

They join you for lunch. "I can't live without it, you know?" said Adam Piechota, a smartphone user. They join you on the road. Then there's this move: holding the device in hand while walking down a busy city street, and reading or typing, not looking at where you're going.

So the question is: where do we draw the boundaries? "I think we're still trying to figure that out," said Sam Grobart, of the New York Times. Sam Grobart is the personal technology editor at the New York Times.

He says our technological development is outpacing our ability to adapt our behavior. Now, it's a matter of weaving these gizmos into our lives without them overtaking us.

"There's a reason why you can mute your phone, or send calls to voicemail. It would be great to remember exactly who was the co-star of 'Manimal.' But maybe that information can wait," Grobart said. Before you growl your objection to smartphone etiquette, many say try common sense.

"If I go to a fancier restaurant then I normally don't have my phone out," Parker said. "If my phone should ring, I'll find a place where it isn't disturbing to people," said Richard Jorgensen, a smartphone user.

91% of adults surveyed by Intel say they smartphone use in unusual places: the movies, the bathroom, the honeymoon. "If you're having that special moment in the heart shaped Jacuzzi, just have the special moment," Grobart said.

So, to Nathan Baden, know that 'Manimal' info is available online at all times, and Karen would like your attention. "I would be very happy to have a nice lunch without a telephone. It would be wonderful," Karen Baden said.
