Kids get a head start

Children get a head start in school when their families help. Ready Set Learn is a free event for families with three-year-old children which provides information to add to what families are already doing to help prepare their children for school.
“Many things contribute to children being prepared for school. Self-confidence, positive relations with peers, language development.
A healthy lifestyle and the skills necessary to communicate needs are all important pieces to help children meet with success when entering kindergarten,” said Cullie Dueck, manager of the North Okanagan Literacy (NOEL) project.
When parents and children attend a free Ready Set Learn event, the children are supervised while they play and adults get information from guest speakers. The guest speakers include representatives from the North Okanagan Neurological Association (NONA), Okanagan Regional Library, Speech and Language Services, Okanagan Boys and Girls Club Child Care Resource and Referral program, and the North Okanagan Early Literacy project.
Each child who attends a Ready Set Learn event will get a bag sewn by the Flying Needles sewing group and filled with a book and fun, literacy-friendly materials.
Each elementary school in Vernon School District will host a Ready Set Learn Event for three-year-olds during the week of Jan. 18-26. Parents should contact their local elementary school for times and to pre-register.
